Navigating Computational Technologies in Visual Design
Kyuha Shim, FRSA, is a designer, researcher, and professor. He currently serves as Head and Professor of Design at the Korea National University of Arts. Prior to this, he was an Associate Professor of Design and Director of CMU’s Computational Creativity Lab at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA). Shim was a researcher at MIT’s SENSEable City Laboratory (Cambridge, MA) and Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht, NL). He has been awarded residencies and fellowships at Frans Masereel Centrum (Kasterlee, BE), Facebook’s Analog Research Lab (Menlo Park, CA), American Institute of Graphic Arts (New York, NY). He provides advanced UX consulting services through computational design to companies such as Samsung Electronics, Kia Motors, and Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) of Seoul Design Foundation.
Shim works in the integrative and interdisciplinary realm of art, design, and technology, with a particular interest in the language of systems. Central to his practice and research is the use of computational thinking as a methodology for design in creating generative systems informed and driven by data. He has exhibited internationally in museums and galleries including Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, Miller Institute of Contemporary Art in Pittsburgh, National Museum of the Republic in Brasilia, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, and ggg Gallery in Tokyo and in design festivals such as Open AGI, Beijing Design Week, Dubai Design Week, London Design Festival, and Seoul Design Olympic.
He conducted doctoral research in the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art (London, UK), holds an MFA with honors in Digital+Media from the Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, US) and a BFA in Digital Media Design from Hongik University (Seoul, KR).

Designing in the Digital Age!
Prof Jesvin Yeo’s research interests are in cultural value, human experience and behaviour, and their applications in cultural heritage, education and wellbeing. She explores new ways to spark and distil insight and addresses people’s needs through bold, optimistic design. In the field of cultural heritage, she interacts with traditional artisans and local communities, researching century-old buildings to explore design innovations. In the subject of well-being, she uses design research methods to explore applied design in different fields and integrates functional, emotional and social aspects according to actual needs.
Prof Jesvin is the esteemed author of nine cultural heritage books, notably “Forgotten Heritage: Uncovering Singapore’s Traditional Chinese Puppets”, “A Collection of Singapore’s Fading Traditional Crafts and Trades”, “Vanishing Crafts” and “Architectural Decorations: Negotiating Symbols Across Time and Place”. Her research work, a testament to her expertise, has been published internationally, including journal articles, book chapters and conference papers, spanning the subjects of Singapore heritage and culture, material culture, wellbeing, design studies and education, typography and book design.
Her culturally related creative works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Basel School of Design, the Berlin Communication Museum, the Centre Pompidou Shanghai (West Bund Museum), the Taiwan Design Museum, and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Among the 80 international design awards she received are the prestigious Red Dot Award (Communication Design), GOOD DESIGN™ Award, and iF Communication Design Award.
Prof Jesvin Yeo, a graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London (MA) and Nanyang Technological University Singapore (PhD), brings a wealth of experience to her current role at the School of Art, Design and Media at the Nanyang Technological University. Her professional journey includes stints at renowned MNC advertising agencies such as the Publicis Group, Young & Rubicam and Ogilvy & Mather in Singapore and London. She currently holds key positions, serving as a Director on the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Board of Directors, Vice President at the Singapore Society of Asian Studies, Chairman of the Innovation & Academic Excellence Committee (IAEC) at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and a Scientific Board Member at the Human Factors in Communication of Design Scientific Board USA.

The Value of Inclusion: Empathy and Interaction through Visual Communication Design
Prof. Shin is focused endeavors span a wide range of topics, exploring the intersections of technology, culture, and design practice. One of primary research interests lies in the examination of emerging trends and technologies in graphic design. They are particularly interested in how advancements in digital tools and platforms are shaping the way designers create and communicate. Through his research, He seeks to uncover insights that can inform pedagogy, industry practices, and the development of new design methodologies.
Prof. Shin has a rich exhibition history, presenting his innovative design work in prestigious galleries, museums, and conferences worldwide and has garnered numerous awards and accolades for their exceptional design work. His works have been featured in the Graphis Design Annual, a renowned publication that showcases the best in visual communication from around the world. Furthermore, he has been awarded numerous gold and silver medals in Design competitions. Also, his works have been recognized by Adobe Design Achievement Awards, a leading software company, for its creativity, innovation, and technical skill. Exhibitions feature a diverse range of projects, including interaction design, digital media installations, typography explorations, posters and more. Through these exhibitions, Prof. Shin would have demonstrated his ability to push creative boundaries, experiment with new techniques, and provoke thought and discussion within the design community.
